You may have heard of Ross Ulbricht and how President Donald Trump only pardoned him.
But who is he, and what’s it got to do with Bitcoins?
For centuries, the blockchain group had been calling for Ulbricht to be freed after a prosecutor in 2015 sentenced him to life in prison.
Who’s Ross?
Ross William Ulbricht, 40, grew up in Austin, Texas, and studied physics at the University of Texas before after getting a Master’s in substance research at Pennsylvania State University, according to his website’s profile.
He is described as having an early interest in “liberty, protection, and free markets, ” which eventually led him to explore Bitcoin.
But, according to Ulbricht, he was even excited about individual rights, leading him to create a site called Silk Road.
What was Silk Road?
Silk Road was an online industry that could only be accessed via Tor—an private internet website. The thought was that users may get stuff secretly and have it delivered—a little like Amazon—but with no registration details needed to use the site.
But Silk Road was n’t only any e-commerce website—it sold items that one could n’t get with a simple Google search.
Customers may search the web for anything from morphine and heroin to all different kinds of isolates of cannabis and have them delivered directly to their entrance.
The page became associated with the “dark web” and everything that critics thought was wrong with it.
After running the site for years, The Government in 2013 caught Ulbricht—who used the name Dread Pirate Roberts when running the website—in a San Francisco collection.
He went on to invest the next two years in jail before getting hit with two life sentences plus 40 years for seven expenses, including distributing cocaine, engaging in a continuing criminal organization, conspiring to undertake computer hackers, and conspiring to commit money laundering.
Preet Bharara, U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said at the moment that Ulbricht was “a medicine supplier and legal huckster who exploited people’s vices and contributed to the deaths of at least six young folks ” when he was jailed in 2015.
Perhaps most ironically, officials also seized 173,991 Bitcoin in connection with the page, which was fair over$ 33. 6 million again next. ( That stockpile is now valued at a significant more—over$ 18 billion —and is still in the arms of the Government. )
It was the most important Bitcoin arrest by the U. S. authorities in past.
Crypto community involvement and President Trump’s forgive
To apply Silk Road, buyers may give using Bitcoin—and Bitcoin only. The digital coin’s pseudonymous nature ( where transactions are linked to wallet addresses made up of numbers and letters rather than names ) was well suited for buying illegal goods.
To this day, despite the offence of the Silk Road event, the crypto group argues that Silk Road was a perfect apply case of the orange coin’s beautiful free market technology: a stateless, censorship-resistant way of buying things on the web.
For that reason, the Ulbricht case grabbed the attention of Bitcoin enthusiasts and OGs, from Roger “Bitcoin Jesus ” Ver and Strike CEO Jack Mallers to Senator Rand Paul.
Ulbricht has talked heavily about Bitcoin—even behind bars.
“Today, I take ideas from Bitcoin. I will stay going, day by day, simply taking the next step over and over. I will keep adding the next stop, ” he wrote in one 2022 blog.
During President Donald Trump’s strategy, the commander-in-chief promised to help the online resource business —including pledging to allow Ulbricht free.
It is a probable move to preserve the crypto donations coming, or maybe for specific causes.
Following Ulbricht’s unconditional pardon in January, Trump claimed the “scum ” that locked up Ulbricht was the same “lunatics ” that went after himself, hinting at the multiple criminal and civil cases filed against the then former president following the end of his first term.
However, whatever the purpose, the business will likely be thanking the Democratic leader for years to come.
